What is it about little bugs that can make a person feel so completely and utterly hopeless?

Two and a half weeks ago I woke up with bites. I knew what it was immediately (this is my second encounter, my first being actually quite easy to resolve). I got the PCO there within a few days, kept getting bitten. I didn't realize this was normal, or that it took two weeks for the chemicals they laid down to work. Had my second treatment today. They found two bed bugs and I found another dead one when I came back in. But the strange thing is, they didn't find any signs of infestation.

My mattress and box spring are new and perfectly clean. There's no blood or scat or anything - and I was bitten at least a dozen times. I've washed everything and dried everything. The clean items are in bags off the property (safely handled so as not to spread). I've been sleeping on the couch (I realize several people discourage this, but it's a studio apartment and all quite the same. They've sprayed the couch as well). Since sleeping on the couch I haven't had a bite, save for one that I think was a mosquito (watering garden in the suburbs where the mosquitoes were crazy the day before it appeared).

Despite this PCO saying it looked okay and to call in two weeks if it continues, I just feel hopeless and depressed and overtaken. I know other people have much worse situations. Does it sound like I might be okay? Like the bugs could be gone or on their way out? When will I feel safe again?
